Canon counts on Turkey for growth in 2010

4 February 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The Turkish market offers many opportunities, Canon Eurasia General Manager Roman Troedthandi has said, noting that the company will embark on new investments in the country.

Speaking to the Anatolia news agency in Adana on Wednesday, the company official said that although they had experienced a “bad year” amid the global financial crisis, Canon enjoyed growth in the Turkish market in 2009. He said the company is planning to increase investments for this year.

Noting that Canon Eurasia has increased its market share since its establishment in Turkey two years ago, Troedthandi said they expect the company to grow by 3 to 4 percent this year. The Japanese Canon Inc. established Canon Eurasia in İstanbul in 2008 to run the company’s operations for Turkey and Israel.

Troedthandi asserted that Canon is the only company to manufacture “the widest range of products” in the market. “From cameras to printers and copiers, Canon has introduced a wide range of products to the market under its own brand name.” He said that because of this capacity, the company has faith in its success in the Turkish market.

He said Turkey has potential -- particularly in the printer market -- because demand is high. Some 95 percent of households in Europe have a printer. This figure is only 15 percent in Turkey. “Our target is to sell a printer to every single household in Turkey,” he said. According to Troedthandi, Turkish customers mostly prefer ink-jet all-in-one printers, which bring a printer, scanner and a copy machine together into one product. “These can be found for around TL 100 in the market,” he said.

Noting that Canon sold some 600,000 printers in Turkey in 2009, Troedthandi said they sold 800,000 digital cameras in the same period.
