Turkish college wins awards in Belgian business contest

3 February 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
A team from Lucerna College, a Turkish college in Belgium, has won awards in the first stage of a contest titled Mini Company (Mini-onderneming), a competition organized by the Flemish Young Enterprises (VLAJO) with the aim of encouraging innovative young people to step into the business world.
The team from Lucerna College, which was established by Turkish entrepreneurs in Belgium, yesterday was awarded first place in the categories of marketing strategy and setting up the most original stand in the first stage of the contest, in which 100 projects from 96 schools are competing.

The team from the Turkish college presented dried fruit that contained the same amount of calories as junk food, such as hamburgers. They based their marketing strategy on the idea that their product -- dried fruit -- provides the same amount of energy as junk food, but does not have negative effects on consumers’ health.

The students, who established an online company, had the highest profit with their marketing strategy and were selected as the best team in the marketing category of the competition.

The headmaster of the school, Fevzi Yıldırım, congratulated the students and teachers of the school on their success in the contest and stated that the main purpose of the competition was to provide young people the opportunity to experience business conditions firsthand.
