Cold weather makes comeback to Turkey

Snowfall that began in Thrace arrived in İstanbul and is expected to spread to the entire Marmara region.

Following several days of relatively warmer days, cold weather has made a comeback to Turkey, with snow beginning in the Marmara region.
The cold weather coming from the Balkans entered Turkey from the Thrace. The snowfall was expected to spread to the entire Marmara region yesterday evening and districts of Çorlu, Silivri and Çatalca in the Marmara region began to receive snow yesterday afternoon.

Çanakkale strait was closed to transit vessel crossings due to heavy snowfall. While snow was expected in the central and western parts of the country, temperatures fell as low as 10 degrees centigrade in the northwestern and western parts of the country. Rainfall which began in the early hours of yesterday in the Thrace and Marmara regions turned into snow in the afternoon.

A statement from the State Meteorology General Directorate noted that the rain and snowfall which will be seen in the central and western parts of Turkey, was expected to be strong in the coastal parts of the Aegean, Antalya and Düzce. Temperatures in İstanbul was expected to fall as low as minus 1 centigrade degrees yesterday night and snowfall is expected to continue today.

Snowfall is expected to become lighter as of today’s afternoon in the western parts of the country while it will become dense in the provinces of Niğde, Aksaray, Sivas, Kayseri, Tokat and Yozgat.

On Thursday, snow is expected in eastern Turkey as well as coastal areas of the Black Sea.

Although snowfall will diminish in Turkey as of Thursday, cold weather is expected to continue until Sunday. Next week, temperatures are expected to rise until Feb. 15. Snowfall will become less intesen from then on.
