3 February 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
Young Turkish filmmaker Mahmut Fazıl Coşkun’s feature debut, “Uzak İhtimal” (Wrong Rosary), and Cemal Şan’s most recent directing effort, “Acı” (Pain), are returning home with trophies from Iran, where the two films were in contention at this year’s Fajr International Film Festival, news agencies reported yesterday.
“Wrong Rosary,” which tells of a naïve love between a young muezzin and a Catholic nurse in modern-day İstanbul, won the best technical, camera and art director awards in the international competition of the festival’s 28th edition, the Anatolia news agency reported. It also said that “Pain,” which looks at generation gaps through the story of an old man and his granddaughter, won the Firoozeh award of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) countries category.

“Ward Number 6,” directed by Russia’s Karen Shakhnazarov, won the award for best film in the international section. “Be Rang-E Arqavan” (In the Color Purple) by Iranian director Ebrahim Hatamikia won the best screenplay award. The best director prize went to Adrien Biniez for his film “Gigante.”

The 28th edition of the Fajr International Film Festival, the biggest and most popular cinematic and cultural event in Iran, is slated to wrap up Thursday in the capital. More than 80 Iranian and international films competed for the Crystal Simorgh awards at this year’s festival.
