Press Roundup

3 February 2010 / ,
Locals can read books 24 hours a day at the İncegiz Village Secondary School in Denizli now that a storage room at the school has been turned into a library. The library is open even during vacations to encourage locals to read.
Akşam: In a front-page story yesterday, the daily reported on the funeral ceremony of Refet Angın, 95, who was among the first teachers of the Turkish Republic. Angın became a history teacher upon the advice of the nation’s founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who told her that Turkey needs qualified teachers to teach the country’s history. Attending Angın’s funeral, Education Minister Nimet Çubukçu said Turkey needs teachers like Angın. Her colleagues said Angın was “the last living legacy of Atatürk.”

Yeni Şafak: “I have kept this bloody shirt for 31 years,” the daily said in the headline of its main story yesterday, quoting remarks from Nükhet İpekçi, daughter of journalist Abdi İpekçi, who was assassinated in 1979. During a live TV program on Monday, İpekçi shocked everyone when she showed the bloodied shirt of her father. “If my father had only been injured in the attack, he would have forgiven [Mehmet Ali] Ağca, the killer, but if he had seen the chain of assassinations in Turkey, he would not have forgiven himself,” İpekçi said.

Taraf: “Öcalan should be spoken with,” the daily in the headline of a front-page article yesterday, referring to the demands voiced during the general assembly of the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) which gathered on Monday. Newly-elected leader of the BDP, Selahattin Demirtaş, indicated that the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader, Abdullah Öcalan, should be addressed regarding the solution of the Kurdish problem. “If the state is sincere about a solution to the Kurdish problem, a solution will be found more easily,” Demirtaş said.
