Manufacturing sees nascent recovery in Q3 productivity

2 February 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Turkey’s manufacturing industry productivity increased by 0.9 percent in the third quarter of 2009 as compared to the same months of 2008, data from the National Productivity Center (MPM) have revealed.

MPM productivity data, compiled by the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) and released on Monday, show that the manufacturing sector enjoyed a slight recovery from the global credit crunch last year.

The productivity figures in the July-September period were, however, lower than the preceding quarter. The industry’s productivity -- measured on a production per person employed basis -- was down by 0.2 percent in the third quarter compared to the previous three months.

Production per work hour increased by 2 percent in the third quarter compared to the same period of 2008, while it stood at the same level as the preceding quarter.

The highest decline in productivity per hour employed in the third quarter compared to the same period of 2008 was seen in the manufacture of coke, refined petroleum products and nuclear fuel, with a 19.4 percent fall. The index remained the same when compared to the previous quarter. The manufacturing industry sub-sectors enjoyed the highest increase in productivity per hour employed in the third quarter over the same period of 2008 with 19.4 percent.

The mining sector’s production per work hour increased by 4.5 percent in the third quarter of 2009 over the same months of the previous year while this increase was 19.3 percent compared to the preceding three months. The production per work hour was up by 3.3 percent for the energy sector in the third quarter over the same months of 2008 while the sector enjoyed an even higher growth of 11.2 percent over the preceding quarter.
