Families of crewmembers attended the ceremony held at the base to mark the departure of the Gemlik.

Turkish warship the TCG Gemlik set sail yesterday from the Aksaz naval base in Marmaris for the Gulf of Aden to join the UN-led force off the Somali coast to assist in efforts to prevent pirates from hijacking foreign ships.
The warship, commanded by Lt. Col. Berker Emre Tok, was escorted by a helicopter and a frigate until it exited the port. Families of crewmembers attended the ceremony held at the base to mark the departure of the Gemlik. Speaking to the Anatolia news agency, İlkşen Tok, the wife of crewmember Emre Tok, stated that she is proud of her husband. “We will miss him, but we are happy that he has been assigned such a duty,” she added.

Sailors fluent in Arabic, German, French and Russian are reportedly onboard the vessel. There are also two doctors on board the warship. The Gemlik is expected to arrive in the Gulf of Aden in seven days and will take over the duties of the frigate TCG Gökova in the UN-led force.

Piracy in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean shipping lanes has sent insurance prices soaring, forced some owners to decide to go around the cape instead of through the Suez Canal and brought an unprecedented deployment of foreign warships to the region.
