UN chief offers support for Cyprus peace talks

1 February 2010 / AP WITH TODAY’S ZAMAN, NICOSIA
In his first visit to ethnically divided Cyprus, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is encouraging the island's rival leaders to solve their decades-old dispute.

Ban says he's confident Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus President Mehmet Ali Talat, and Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias can make a breakthrough in ongoing peace talks.

Ban is meeting the two separately Monday, ahead of joint talks.

In 17 months of negotiations, Christofias and Talat have achieved only marginal progress. But Ban praised the leaders for making significant headway on power sharing during stepped up talks last month.

Cyprus was split along ethnic lines in 1974 when Turkey intervened in response to a brief coup by supporters of union with Greece.
