Ambassador under investigation over ‘sexual harassment’ charges

1 February 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, ANKARA
The Foreign Ministry has launched an investigation into complaints filed against Turkish Ambassador to Italy Ali Yakıtal over charges of “sexual harassment,” news reports said over the weekend.
Two female public servants have recently complained to the ministry that they had been subject to sexual harassment by Yakıtal, the reports said. Before being appointed to Italy, Yakıtal was serving as a foreign policy advisor to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The news reports didn’t elaborate on whether the allegations of sexual harassment were related to his term in office in Ankara, at the Prime Ministry or his post in Rome.

Yakıtal, who has a 37-year-long career in diplomacy, meanwhile, firmly denied the charges, saying he was in favor of being investigated so that he could be cleared of the charges.

Both the complainants and Yakıtal are expected to give written statements to Foreign Ministry officials shortly within the framework of the ongoing investigation, reports said, while NTV news channel noted that Yakıtal might be called back to the headquarters in line with diplomatic protocol since there is an ongoing investigation about him.
