Arınç hails Euronews’ Turkish broadcasting

1 February 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
International news channel Euronews’ newly launched Turkish-language broadcasts will open an important door to Turkey, Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç, who is also the state minister responsible for the state-run broadcaster Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT), said on Sunday.
Euronews is a multilingual channel that already broadcasts in eight languages -- German, English, Arabic, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Russian. Its Turkish broadcast went on air on Saturday. The İstanbul Chamber of Commerce (İTO) held a ceremony in İstanbul to pay tribute to those who contributed to Euronews’ broadcasting in Turkish.

“Turkey’s European Union full membership efforts will become stronger with the contributions of Euronews,” Arınç said at the ceremony, adding that Turkey would also become a better known country with the broadcasts by Euronews. Euronews’ Turkish service will be broadcast around the world by satellite and cable television operators, as well as over the Internet.

In accordance with an agreement signed by TRT and Euronews, the supervisory board of Euronews, chaired by Pier Luigi Malesani, is now made up of 14 members, including TRT. Euronews Turkish will reach 293 million people in 150 countries. In addition, Euronews in Turkish will be distributed all over Turkey by TRT and will be available on all distribution networks. The Turkish version of Euronews will be produced at the Euronews headquarters in Lyon, France, by a team of 20 to 30 permanent staff, including 17 Turkish journalists. The Euronews Web site www.euronews.net will also have a Turkish version.
