The security teams work in İstanbul’s most popular and crowded locations, such as shopping centers, to combat purse-snatchers and thieves. Thieves trying to steal items from people are often arrested and photographed by security teams, and then the photos are sent to other security teams to be identified. Picking up on this practice, criminals are now starting to take photos of security teams and passing them on to their friends so they know who to steer clear of.The teams, whose numbers have been increased from 498 to 925, were established by former İstanbul Police Chief Celalettin Cerrah and the current chief, Dursun Güneş, who is now responsible for them. “We have been so successful in combating thieves that they are now taking photos of the officers in the teams,” Güneş noted.
Güneş pointed out that they will expand the areas security teams operate in to cover bazaars, bus and Metrobus stops, train stations and crowded streets as well as shopping centers and other places that draw crowds.
