DNA test proves twins born to different fathers

30 January 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
A DNA paternity test performed at the request of the husband of a woman in İstanbul has shown that the woman gave birth to twins who have different fathers, the Sabah daily reported yesterday.
In a recent case, the first of its kind in Turkey, a 24-year-old woman, C.K., had sexual intercourse with her husband, A.K., and her lover, N.A., on the same day, when the twins were conceived. She gave birth to twins from different fathers after two eggs were fertilized by the sperm of the two men, a report prepared by the Council of Forensic Medicine (ATK) based on the paternity test has shown.

Doctors say this phenomenon, known as heteropaternal superfecundation, is so rare there are only a handful of documented cases in the world.

The background of the event dates back six years when C.K. started a relationship with N.A., a man who was married with children. When the woman’s family learned about the affair, they pushed their daughter to marry another man, A.K. Although C.K. refused to marry A.K., she was forced to wed him in 2006. However, she continued her affair with N.A.

She conceived two months after getting married and gave birth to the twins in December 2006. Soon after, the young woman noticed that one of the twins looked like her lover, N.A., and left the house in panic, leaving the twins with her husband. Meanwhile, neighbors told A.K. that that his wife had betrayed him, and he decided to have a paternity test performed. Later, his wife returned home, but he didn’t tell her about the DNA test.

The results of the test showed that there was a 99.999 percent chance that the twins were fathered by different men.

The man subsequently threw his wife and the baby of the other man out of the house and sent his child to live with his mother. The woman attempted to return to the house of her father, but her father also disowned her. She then sought refuge in a women’s shelter, and when she left the baby was placed in the custody of the state.
