Turkish maritime museum agreed to be established in Antalya

29 January 2010 / MÜRSEL KILINÇ , ANTALYA
Archaeologists, politicians and architects have begun work on founding a maritime museum in Antalya’s Kumluca district.
Kumluca Mayor Hüsamettin Çetinkaya, Turkish Archaeological Artifacts Collectors Association (KOL-DER) Deputy Chairman Mustafa Aydemir, members of the Kumluca Training Foundation (KUMEV) and many architects came together yesterday to exchange ideas on the maritime museum. Most of the participants reached a consensus that Kumluca is the best place for the museum, underlining that Kumluca can attract much attention in terms of tourism once the museum opens.

KOL-DER Deputy Chairman Aydemir said it is very unfortunate that Turkey lacks a suitable maritime museum even though it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited regions in the world due to its location at the intersection of Europe and Asia. “Kumluca Mayor Hüsamettin Çetinkaya has promised to establish a maritime museum. We, too, have completed all necessary preparations for such a museum. We plan to take the next step in the upcoming week,” he said.

Mayor Çetinkaya, noting that millions of tourists come to Turkey every year, said: “We agreed to open a maritime museum in Antalya, a place considered to be among the best sites for a maritime museum. We believe opening a maritime museum in Antalya will contribute considerably to the tourism sector.”
