Turkish champion Efes Pilsen was beaten but not crushed by Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid, 77-70, in a thrilling Euroleague Top 16 game in the Spanish capital on Wednesday night.
It was a fast-paced game in which Efes matched the Spaniards head-to-head, shoulder-to-shoulder, speed-for-speed and stamina-for-stamina throughout the duration of the encounter in Madrid. The Turkish side not only made too many turnovers but also luck was against it. The low margin of defeat nonetheless gives Efes hope for its home game against Real and also in the remaining matches at home and on the road against Italy’s Montipaschi Siena and Maccabi Tel Aviv of Israel. Efes Pilsen’s 34-year-old US shooting guard Charles Smith was the overall top scorer with 18 points, while Louis Bullock led Real with 12.
