Crocs and Roosters, Lions and Storm complete quarters list

29 January 2010 / OKAN UDO BASSEY , İSTANBUL
The Bursaspor Green Crocs came out unscathed as they bashed poor Sivasspor 4-0 in their last Ziraat Turkish Cup Group C match at Bursa’s Atatürk Stadium on Wednesday to earn a berth in the quarterfinals.
Group C, in fact, lived up to its name as the “group of death.” As we mentioned in our preview on Wednesday, nothing was certain in this group going into the final matches. Bursaspor and Sivasspor had seven points each, while the Denizlispor Roosters had five and so anything was possible.

Sivasspor was eliminated after the rout by Bursa and the Denizlispor Roosters, placed third before Wednesday’s matches, joined the Green Crocs in the quarterfinals after beating second-division Tarsus İdmanyurdu 2-1 away.

Bursaspor therefore finished as group leader with 10 points, Denizlispor followed with eight while Sivasspor, Giresunspor and Tarsus İdmanyurdu bit the dust.

There were no surprises in the predictable Group B as the Galatasaray Lions played to a 0-0 draw with Ankaragücü at the snow-covered 19 Mayıs Stadium in the capital. The result means the undefeated Lions finished first in the group with 10 points.

In the other Group B match, the Trabzonspor Black Sea Storm beat visiting second-division Orduspor 2-1 in their “mini” Black Sea derby at Trabzon’s Hüseyin Avni Aker Stadium to qualify as the runner-up with nine points.

The Bursaspor Green Crocs, Denizlispor Roosters, Galatasaray Lions and the Trabzonspor Black Sea Storm therefore joined Fenerbahçe and Antalyaspor from Group A and İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor and Manisaspor from Group D in the last eight.
