Union reveals higher hunger, poverty ine for January

27 January 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The monthly income necessary to adequately feed a family of four, referred to as the hunger line, has increased to TL 812 this month, according to the Confederation of Turkish Labor Unions (Türk-İş).

This amount was TL 795 in December.

The monthly Hunger and Poverty Line Survey, released on Tuesday by Türk-İş, revealed that the amount that a family of four must earn monthly in order to pay rent and meet basic needs, such as food, transportation, clothing and education, also referred to as the poverty line, rose from TL 2,588 in November to TL 2,644 in December.

The Türk-İş statement emphasized that the amount of money which a family of four needs to spend only on food increased by TL 74 within the past six months. According to the union, considering other such expenditures as rent, education and health, workers have to earn some TL 240 more than they used to six months ago so that they can meet their needs.

Following the latest adjustments by the government, net minimum wage per month for workers over the age of 16 increased to TL 577.01 from TL 546.48. The amount is expected to rise to TL 599.58 in the second half of the year. Türk-İş said recent increases in public workers’ wages were far from enough to compensate for the loss resulting from steep increases in product and service prices.
