Nazlı Ilıcak, a columnist for Sabah, told Today’s Zaman that 36 journalists whose names are included in a “would-be arrested list” will hold a press conference on Thursday to denounce the Sledgehammer Security Operation Plan and then file a criminal complaint against the originators of the plan.
Last week, a Turkish daily exposed yet another coup plan devised by the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) against the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government. Allegedly prepared by Gen. Çetin Doğan, the plan aimed to topple the democratically elected government through increased chaos in the country. Chaos would be incited through bomb attacks at İstanbul’s popular mosques and dogfights between Turkish and Greek aircraft.
According to the plan, the pro-coup wing in the military would have 36 journalists arrested and “make use of” 137 others in stirring up public support for the coup.
The 36 journalists have decided to hold a press conference at the Grand Cevahir Hotel in İstanbul at 11 a.m. on Thursday to denounce the subversive plans by the armed forces.
“The journalists we have contacted as of now have agreed to take part in the press conference. We want to do something concrete about the coup plan. We will first denounce it and then file a criminal complaint against its instigators,” Ilıcak added.
Sibel Erarslan, whose name is also included on the notorious list, said coherent steps should be taken by civilians against underhanded army plans. “The idea was first put forward by Cengiz Çandar [a Radikal columnist] on Sunday. He called for a joint declaration by the 36 journalists. Nazlı Ilıcak also had the idea of taking action against the coup plan and pioneered a press conference to denounce it. I believe such conferences should be held to unite in a common voice against subversive plans,” she told Today’s Zaman.
The Sledgehammer plan is not, however, the first of its kind. The liberal Taraf daily has revealed several others in the past, including the Action Plan to Fight Reactionaryism and the Cage Operation Action Plan. All of those plans were drafted by active duty members of the military and sought to topple the AK Party government by provoking chaos in society.
