Carbon monoxide leak poisons family of 8 in BursaBURSA A family of eight was rushed to a hospital as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a leak in a coal-burning stove on Monday in Bursa’s Yıldırım district. 

All members of the Tosun family were taken to Yüksek İhtisas Education and Research Hospital. While Türkan (45) and Yağmur (17) Tosun were reportedly in serious condition, other members of the family, Sait (46), Rıdvan (18), Çimen (16), Çiğdem (11) and Güven (13) Tosun, and another child whose name was not released, were reportedly in good condition.


Anti-smuggling unit raids İstanbul Atatürk Airport

İSTANBUL Teams from İstanbul Police Department’s Anti-smuggling and Organized Crime Bureau raided the duty-free shop at the İstanbul Atatürk Airport early on Monday upon a tipoff. The store was closed during the police search and a number of suspects, including officers who had been working at the store, were detained. The police search was still in progress at the time Today’s Zaman went to print.


25 people treated for carbon monoxide poisoning

KONYA Twenty-five people, five of them children, received treatment over the weekend at various Konya hospitals for carbon monoxide poisoning resulting from leaks in coal-burning stoves. Konya Provincial Health Director Hasan Küçükkendirci warned residents about the danger of carbon monoxide leaks. Noting that those who feel fatigue, nausea or have problems breathing must get out of rooms with coal-burning stoves, Küçükkendirci said people with such complaints should immediately see a doctor. He also warned that stoves must be extinguished before going to sleep and that they must not be used in windy and stormy weather.


23 referred to court for theft

İSTANBUL Twenty-three people detained for involvement in theft were referred to a courthouse in İstanbul yesterday. The 23 people were taken in and charged with engaging in pick pocketing and purse snatching on public transportation vehicles, in shopping malls, at funeral prayers, at street demonstrations and at sporting events about one week ago through simultaneous operations carried out in various districts of İstanbul. The suspects were allegedly involved in 39 incidents of theft. Searches conducted at places mentioned by the detained suspects in their testimony led to the confiscation of 47 mobile phones, one unlicensed gun, five fake ID cards and dozens of electronics.


Fire causes damage in passage

İSTANBUL A fire that broke out in a passage in İstanbul’s Beyoğlu district yesterday caused damage but no casualties. The fire in Fitaş Passage was extinguished before spreading to stores in the building. The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed although a short circuit is believed to have sparked the flames. Due to the intense smoke in the passage, people in the passage’s AFM movie theater were evacuated from the building.
