Reports: 120 al-Qaida suspects detained in Turkey

22 January 2010 / AP, ANKARA
News reports says Turkish police have rounded up 120 people suspected of ties to the al-Qaida terror network.

The state-run Anatolia news agency, quoting unnamed officials, says the suspects were detained in simultaneous raids in 16 provinces. Private NTV television said at least 120 people were taken away for questioning.

Anatolia says those detained include a university faculty member in the eastern city of Van, suspected of recruiting students and other people and of sending them to Afghanistan for training.

Homegrown Islamic militants tied to the al-Qaida carried out suicide bombings in İstanbul, killing 58 people in 2003.

However, al-Qaida's austere and violent interpretation of Islam receives little public backing in Turkey.
