Four of the workers participating in the hunger strike were taken to Numune Teaching and Research Hospital after three days of fasting. They were released from the hospital following treatment. The workers were then taken back to Türk-İş headquarters to rejoin the protest.
Other workers taking part in the hunger strike have reportedly begun to suffer from blood pressure problems. A number of doctors from the Turkish Doctors Union (TTB) have volunteered their services to monitor the health of those participating in the hunger strike, while a Health Ministry ambulance is stationed at the protest venue.
Meanwhile, Democratic Left People’s Party (DSHP) Chairwoman Rahşan Ecevit reportedly attended in the sit-in protest in front of the Türk-İş headquarters from Wednesday until early Thursday morning in support of the workers. Officials from a number of other civil society organizations also visited the workers.
‘No rift within Türk-İş administration’
Highlighting that no Türk-İş administrators are afraid of making the decision to hold a general strike, Türk-İş Secretary-General Mustafa Türkel told the Anatolia news agency yesterday that there is no rift within Türk-İş.
A demonstration, “Democracy and Rights Meeting for Bread, Peace and Freedom,” held on Tuesday to support workers dismissed from Tekel, brought disagreements between members of the confederation into the spotlight. A group of Türk-İş members, led by Türkel, have long been urging the board to call a general strike. Workers from this group appeared on a stage following a speech by Türk-İş head Mustafa Kumlu and occupied it for some time until they were convinced by other workers to calm down.
Türkel also stated that some workers had emotional reactions during the demonstration because of the Tekel workers’ current situation, adding that the reactions were not intended to damage the unity of Türk-İş and that they will not let such a thing happen in the future, either.
