Privatization tender on four sugar refineries suspended

20 January 2010 / THE ANATOLIA NEWS AGENCY, ANKARA
Privatization tender process on four state-owned sugar refineries in Turkey has been shut down after a high court order for stay of execution, the country's privatization authority said Wednesday.

The Council of State, the top highest administrative court, ruled last week for the suspension of the tender process on plants owned by Turkish Sugar Refineries Corp. in Elazığ, Malatya, Erzincan and Elbistan provinces.

The deadline for offers on the plants had been announced as January 21, 2010.

Şeker-İş Union, union of sugar refinery workers, appealed in September last year for the stay of execution of the tender.

Thousands of workers from several unions and union confederations including sugar refinery workers took to the streets last Sunday in capital Ankara to voice their opposition against government's privatization policies.
