Experts try to decode mystery list found in ‘cosmic’ search

19 January 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
A file including a list of 30 names apparently written in code was found in the house of an army major whose computer was searched as part of the ongoing investigation into an alleged plot to assassinate Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç. The investigation has been dubbed the “cosmic search” by the media because civilian prosecutors have been searching top secret military facilities as part of it.

So far eight officers, including colonels, majors and NCOs, have been detained in the investigation. A civilian prosecutor and a civilian judge are searching the facilities of the General Staff’s Special Forces Command, where top-secret army documents are archived.

A thorough search of Maj. İ.G.’s computer revealed an encrypted file. Maj. İ.G., one of the primary suspects in the probe, serves at the Tactical Mobilization Unit of the Special Forces Command, which is where all the other suspected officers also serve. The encrypted file apparently had been deleted but was recovered by computer experts with the police department’s anti-terrorism unit. Prosecutor Mustafa Bilgili is now trying to understand what the 30-name list could have been prepared for, and investigators are trying to establish if the names listed are civilians or military officers. It was not clear, however, as the information in the file regarding these people seems to be encrypted in a special code. Specialists are currently working to decode the file and understand why the list was made.
