Cold winter weather will grip most parts of Turkey this week, with a cold front arriving from Siberia. Although still above seasonal averages in most of the country, temperatures are expected to drop this week.
According to forecasts from the State Meteorology Directorate, most of the country will see showers today, while torrential rainfall is expected in the inner parts of the Black Sea region and at higher elevations in Central Anatolia. Sleet eventually turning to snow is expected in the northern and eastern parts of Eastern Anatolia and the Marmara region, which will also experience a strong northeasterly wind.

On Wednesday, cloudy and rainy weather is expected across the country, with the exception of the western Marmara and the coastal Aegean regions. Heavy snowfall is expected in the provinces of Adana, Osmaniye, Hatay, Kahramanmaraş, Elazığ, Bingöl, Bitlis and Muş.

Thursday is expected to bring mostly cloudy weather, with rain expected in Central Anatolia and in the eastern and southeastern regions as well as in the provinces of Kocaeli, Sakarya, Bilecik, Kütahya, Uşak, Afyon, Adana, Osmaniye, Hatay and Kahramanmaraş.

The bleak forecast will continue into Friday, with most of the country experiencing a heavy cloud cover. Rain is expected in the Marmara, Aegean and Mediterranean regions and in the western parts of the Black Sea region and northeastern parts of Eastern Anatolia as well as in Ankara, Eskişehir, Çankırı, Trabzon, Rize and Artvin.

Snow comes to İstanbul

Snowfall is expected in higher elevations of İstanbul’s Asian side today in the afternoon and throughout the city by evening, Deputy State Meteorology Director Ali Karataş told the Anatolia news agency. No precipitation is expected in the city on Thursday, however, Karataş said.
