Israeli FM wants to defuse tension with Turkey

13 January 2010 / AP, NICOSIA
Israel's foreign minister says his country wants direct dialogue to defuse a diplomatic feud with Turkey, but must be treated with dignity and respect.

Avigdor Liberman said on Wednesday that Israel won't "tolerate any anti-Semitic remarks and incitement against Jews", but doesn't want a confrontation with Turkey.

He said Israel respects Turkey and its people and expects the same in return.

Once-close ties between Israel and Turkey have soured over a Turkish TV show that depicts Israeli intelligence agents as brutal.

The feud deepened earlier this week when Liberman's deputy forced Turkey's ambassador to Israel to sit on a sofa lower than his and denied him a handshake.
