GAP to focus on farmer training

12 January 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The government plans to step up its efforts this year to organize a program to train farmers in the Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP) region.

Speaking during the inauguration of a workshop on training farmers in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa on Monday, GAP Regional Development Administration (BKİ) Vice President Mustafa Kölmek told reporters that the government will commence research this year on launching a farmer training program prepared by the State Planning Organization (DPT). Underlining that the program will play a prominent role in the future of GAP, he said they need the support of all parties involved to this end.

Also speaking at the event, BKİ representative for the southeastern region Mehmet Açıkgöz said they expect the program to be finalized within the next three to four years, focusing on filling in gaps in the infrastructure. Appealing to individual farmers and farmer cooperatives alike, the program aims to provide them with some of the necessary support from production to marketing, Açıkgöz said. Officials from state institutions involved with GAP, such as the State Waterworks Authority (DSİ), will also attend the workshop, which is scheduled to end today.
