Turkey looks for more Japanese tourists

12 January 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Culture and Tourism Minister Ertuğrul Günay has said that “Japan Year 2010 in Turkey” is expected to attract many Japanese tourists but that the physical distance separating the two countries was creating transportation issues that could limit the number of tourists coming to Turkey for the cultural activities.

Speaking on Monday, Günay commented on Japan Year 2010 in Turkey, which will include art exhibitions by Japanese artists and other Japanese cultural events, stating that it would have an important cultural and economic impact on Turkey.

“I could honestly stop everything I am doing right now and just focus entirely on Japan because the Japanese are respectful of the places they visit, and they have a willingness to shop and spend,” Günay stressed. Revealing that there would be events related to the year in the provinces of Ankara, İstanbul, İzmir, Antalya, Mersin and Safranbolu, Günay said: “I know these events will help Turks learn about Japanese culture and lead the way for more Japanese tourists coming to Turkey. There’s a lot of potential and interest, but I just wish we weren’t so far away from each other.”
