Woman pulled trigger in family murder, suicide in northern Turkey

7 January 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
A woman apparently shot her two children and policeman husband before committing suicide on Tuesday in the northern province of Rize. Her husband and one son died, while another son was injured.
The Rize Police Department noted in a written statement that they believe the murders were committed by Gülseren Olgun (28), since her Malatya-born husband Osman Çağatay Olgun, who was an officer with the Rize Police Department, and the couple’s sons, Altuğ Berk Olgun (4) and Mustafa Gökberk Olgun (7), were shot multiple times while the wife had one gunshot wound to her chest. The 7-year-old was still alive when police arrived at the scene and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he underwent surgery. The Rize Police Department reported that he is in stable condition. The statement also pointed out that the incident is currently under investigation and that further information is expected to be available following further investigation and autopsies, noting that a large number of empty cartridges were found at the scene.

A local resident notified the police about hearing gunshots from a neighboring house at about 8:30 p.m. When police entered the house in the İslampaşa neighborhood, they found four people lying on the floor. The initial reports on the incident had stated that the husband had strangled his wife and shot his children before committing suicide.
