Internet-based system to take over work permit applications

4 January 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, ANKARA
Companies will soon be able to submit applications for work permits for their foreign employees over the Internet, thereby avoiding the massive bureaucratic burden currently involved.

A new project recently initiated by Labor and Social Security Minister Ömer Dinçer aims to make the work permit application process easier. The ministry plans to launch the new system early this year.

The new system will make it easier for ministry officials to make their decision faster and for companies to follow the progress of the application process. The system will also increase efficiency because electronic documents can be archived more easily and accessed when needed.

In the transition period to the new system, applicants will be asked to submit their request by filling out forms on Turkey’s major e-state Web site www.turkiye.gov.tr. The system will send a single-use password to a cell phone for the company to access the system. The company will then need to submit the necessary documents in person or by mail. Decisions on applications will be sent to applicant companies via e-mail.
