Aselsan’s new wireless devices operate like mobile phones

4 January 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, ANKARA
Thanks to communications technology developed by Turkey’s electronic defense company, Aselsan, a new generation of wireless devices will soon be able to perform tasks a mobile phone can do, such as transmitting pictures and videos, sending text messages and connecting to the Internet, through a secure network for military and government use.

In an effort to provide stable communication during disasters, crises or terrorist attacks, Aselsan has been working on a new digital wireless system for the last decade. Nearly 50 engineers worked in the software development and $40 million was spent on research and development (R&D) activities.

For the infrastructure of the new communications system, base stations and antenna towers that are resistant against strong earthquakes and storms have been constructed in 20 provinces. The system, which is called the Public Security and Emergency Situation Communications system, was first used in Aydın by the province’s Gendarmerie General Command. Officials said the necessary infrastructure would be established across Turkey by 2016.

Public services will accelerate

“This is the largest integrated and digital wired and wireless communication system in Turkey. It provides rapid and on-time access to information, speeding up coordination and enabling the fast and secure offering of security services,” officials speaking to the Anatolia news agency said.

Not only security forces will be able take advantage of the new system, officials added, underlining that governors’ offices and civil defense offices will also have access to the system in cases of disasters, such as earthquakes, in which the telecommunications system collapses.

Giving an example of the possible uses of the system, officials said: “A police officer will be easily able to connect to the central database in Ankara by using the wireless device, to verify someone’s personal information. He will immediately have access to any information about a missing person or a stolen car, a driver’s license or a license for vehicle or gun. This will speed up security services.”

A number of US law enforcement agencies have shown interest in Aselsan’s new-generation digital wireless devices and have purchased 6,000 units so far, mainly for use in police and fire departments.

Aselsan is a leading electronics and electronic systems company in Turkey that designs, develops and manufactures modern electronic systems for military and industrial customers in Turkey and abroad. It produces military and professional communications systems including radar, electronic warfare, hybrid microelectronic circuits, thermal cameras, laser ranger/designators and inertial navigation systems.
