Picnic areas replace illegal buildings in Florya

2 January 2010 / MUZAFFER SALCIOĞLU , İSTANBUL
Florya, one of İstanbul’s favorite districts, now has more picnic areas and green spaces after illegal structures in the coastal district were demolished by the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality.
Numerous unlicensed buildings including cafes, restaurants, dwellings and entertainment venues had long been encroaching on the Florya coast, but over the last five years projects by the municipality have transformed the expanse into an open public space. Municipal officials stated that they have put great effort into “cleaning up” Florya and had demolished 428 illegal buildings.

In addition to unlicensed buildings, abandoned cowsheds on the coast have also been removed, making way for more parks. At the end of the project, which also led to the  razing of illegal casinos, nearly 1 million square meters have been freed up for public use.

“During the process 98 lawsuits were filed against the municipality, all of which have concluded with the ruling that the municipality has the right to demolish the unlicensed construction,” said a municipal official, who chose to remain anonymous.
