[NEWS BRIEFS]

29 December 2009 / ,
Beylikdüzü still waits for a Metrobus stop İSTANBUL The Metrobus line, which is a rapid transportation line in İstanbul that runs on the highway and was developed to help fight İstanbul’s traffic and transportation problems, has yet to be extended to the Beylikdüzü district on the European side.

İstanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaş had previously announced that construction of the Metrobus line would be completed by the end of this summer, but it seems that the municipality hasn’t taken any steps to construct a Metrobus stop in Beylikdüzü.

While officials at the municipality stated that construction of a Metrobus stop in the Beylikdüzü district would be completed as soon as possible, people in Beylikdüzü continue to complain to the muhtar (neighborhood head). Ömer Soydan, a muhtar of a neighborhood in Beylikdüzü, stated that people want the Metrobus to be connected to their area since traffic in İstanbul is a major problem. “The population of our neighborhood is 40,000. Every day people complain about the transportation problem,” he noted. Stating that he contacted the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), Soydan added, “I hope that the Metrobus will be extended to our neighborhood by the end of this upcoming summer.

Restoration of historic Hisar Mosque begins

İZMİR After the Hisar Mosque in İzmir was badly damaged in a 1976 earthquake and then closed in 1985, architect Onur Özbaşbuğ, who previously reconstructed the Mostar Bridge, built during the Ottoman period and located in Bosnia and Herzegovina, won a tender to restore the Hisar Mosque last March. The Mostar Bridge, which was demolished on Nov. 9, 1993 during the Bosnian War, was reconstructed between 2002 and 2004 by Özbaşbuğ. Özbaşbuğ will complete the restoration of the Hisar Mosque by July 2010.

High winds rattle airplane

İSTANBUL A plane parked at the İstanbul Atatürk airport was dragged sideways by a strong gust of wind, which was measured at speeds up to 85 km/h yesterday, State Airports Management General Directorate (DHMİ) officials said. Winds gusting at 60km/h suddenly rose to 85km/h, moving a parked MD-82 passenger craft owned by Best Air. DHMİ officials who arrived at the scene immediately fixed the plane through the help of blocks, preventing it from damaging other planes nearby.
