Cancer is a disease that can be both deadly and difficult to treat. Unfortunately, in recent years Turkey has seen an increase in the rate of lung cancer in particular, but it is impossible to connect this increase to any one factor. The fact is that everything from what we eat and drink and the environment in which we live to the household cleaning products we use can play a role in the development of cancer. Of course, it is important not to become paranoid while attempting to protect yourself from cancer. And remember, when you panic unnecessarily and self-medicate or use herbal remedies without consulting a doctor, you can actually increase rather than decrease your chances of becoming ill.
However, there are a few small preventative measures you can take to protect yourself from cancer.
You can find the answers to many of the questions you may have about cancer in a book “Cancer: 101 Solutions to a Preventable Epidemic,” by Liz Armstrong, Guy Dauncey and Anne Wordsworth. Here are some suggestions to prevent cancer from this book:
Open your eyes: All our lives we are exposed to many carcinogens, some of which we may not be aware of. Gasoline, synthetic fabrics and some cleaning agents contain chemicals that can increase your likelihood of developing cancer. There are many more similar examples. So the first rule in guarding against all of these carcinogens and other possible dangers in your life is to simply keep your eyes open.
Adopt healthy habits: Be physically active, avoid using cars, ride a bike and walk. Don’t expose yourself to too much sun, but make sure you get enough vitamin D.
Avoid all tobacco smoke: Of course, at the top of the list of diseases caused by cigarettes is lung cancer. Stay as far away from cigarettes and tobacco smoke as possible.
Eat a healthy diet: Try to eat lots of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. Drink lots of purified water (free of chlorine and other unnatural elements) and different teas, especially green tea. Try to make sure you are consuming vitamins and minerals that strengthen your immune system.
Switch to safe personal products: There are many personal grooming products that we use in daily life that may not actually be safe. Nowadays you need to research what you use before you use it in order to protect yourself.
Live in a healthy home: Make sure the water you use in your home and the air in your home are unpolluted. If you have the opportunity, use organic fabrics in your home and natural wall coverings. You can always create a healthier environment in your home.
Clean your home safely: Take off your shoes at the front door. In order to make sure you have clean floors, clean them thoroughly at least twice a week. Remember that vinegar is a natural disinfectant and gets rid of bad odors as well. Also, make sure any home air fresheners you use to make your house smell better are natural.
Treat your garden with TLC, not 2,4 D: Bid farewell to garden pesticides. Do not use Astroturf in your garden. Grow organic plants and foods.
Minimize your exposure to radiation: Due to the prevalence of cell phones, we are constantly exposed to radiation these days. To reduce this, try to use regular phones as much as possible. Also, try not to use wireless phones. Use headsets. When you are not using your cell phone, make sure it’s turned off.
