Manufacturing industry productivity rises in third quarter

26 December 2009 / HASAN BOZKURT, ANKARA
Turkey’s manufacturing industry has enjoyed an increase in productivity in the third quarter of 2009, following one year of continuous decline, Turkish Confederation of Employers’ Unions (TİSK) data, released on Friday, has shown.

According to research conducted by TİSK, taking Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) data into account, in the months of July, August and September, production and employment in the manufacturing industry further declined over the previous quarter while the sector’s productivity increased in the same period.

The manufacturing industry suffered a 9.1 percent decline in production in the third quarter of this year, while employment also fell 10 percent over the second quarter of 2009. The TİSK report noted that it expects the falling trend in employment to continue while production could see a slight recovery in the following months.

Turkey’s manufacturing industry had sustained a heavy loss since the beginning of the global financial crisis. Data covering the first three quarters of 2009 reveal how bad the situation was. In the first nine months of 2009 the decline in production was 16.9 percent compared to same period of 2008, while the decline in employment and manufacturing industry productivity was 10.9 percent and 6.5 percent, respectively, in the same period.
