CHP closure case filed over Ergenekon support

26 December 2009 / ÖMER SARI, ADANA
An Adana man has filed a criminal complaint at the Supreme Court of Appeals, petitioning to shut down the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) for its alleged support of the illegal Ergenekon gang.

Adana-based journalist Naim Yalçınel filed his complaint on Thursday, saying that CHP deputies have sat in the attorneys’ seats to defend suspects in the ongoing trial of Ergenekon, a shadowy deep-state gang accused of murders and other atrocities spanning decades. “The [pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party] DTP was shut down for supporting the [terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party] PKK. And the CHP should be shut down for its support of Ergenekon,” he said.

“The CHP is no longer the Republican People’s Party founded by the great leader Atatürk. The CHP is providing direct, overt support to the Ergenekon terrorist organization, which is brimming over with terrorism charges,” he said, arguing that like the efforts of the PKK and other enemies of Turkey, Ergenekon aimed to weaken and eliminate the Turkish Republic. “CHP deputies cannot be a part of crimes committed against the state. This behavior cannot take place on the part of people under the roof of the Turkish Parliament, and this situation is such that necessitates the removal of their status as deputies. The CHP and [its leader] Deniz Baykal must either turn away from this mistake or the CHP must be shut down,” Yalçınel said.

Emphasizing the recent closure of the now-defunct DTP for its support of terrorism, Yalçınel argued that the actions of the CHP were no different. “Terrorism is something so horrible that nobody in possession of an intellect or conscience could side with it. Killing people indiscriminately -- women, children, soldiers, police or civilians -- is something that nobody can support without selling their soul to the devil. Documents that have emerged recently have shown that the Ergenekon terrorist organization is at least as conscienceless and harmful to our country as the PKK. The Ergenekon terrorist organization that acts in the name of Turkishness should not be supported by any Turk with a conscience, a sense of mercy or an intellect,” he said.

The CHP’s support of the defendants in the Ergenekon trial is wholly illogical, Yalçınel said. “The CHP is providing direct support to the Ergenekon terrorist organization, going to court and sitting in the attorneys’ seats, meeting with detained members of the organization and illogically playing defense. One CHP deputy met with three MİT [National Intelligence Organization] members arrested on charges of working for the Ergenekon terrorist organization,” he noted.
