Eight dead after traffic accident KAHRAMANMARAŞ A road accident occurred yesterday in the southern province of Kahramanmaraş, leaving eight dead and five injured.

A van traveling from Elbistan, a district of Kahramanmaraş, to the city center overturned in Göksun due to heavy fog and ice on the road. The injured passengers were rushed by ambulance to Göksun State Hospital. The dead and injured have yet to be identified.


PTT robbers shoot security guard

İSTANBUL Three armed robbers shot a security guard at the Postal and Telecommunications General Directorate’s (PTT) office in İstanbul’s Ümraniye district yesterday while they were trying to escape after robbing the PTT office. Three men wearing ski masks entered the PTT Ümraniye office yesterday morning and reportedly took TL 153,000, which was had been brought to the office to pay pensions. While they were leaving, a security guard, Tolga Uzun, attempted to stop them and was shot by one of the robbers. The security guard was injured and brought to the hospital. The police have launched an investigation to capture the attackers.


Car plummets into trench, 7 die

ŞANLIURFA A car plummeted into a trench filled with water near a road between the southeastern city of Şanlıurfa’s Akçakale and Harran districts on Thursday night, resulting in seven fatalities. Speaking to reporters at the scene, Akçakale District Governor Şefik Aygöl stated that the accident resulted in the deaths of seven people, three of whom were children. The car was reportedly returning from a wedding in Harran around midnight and plummeted into the trench when the driver lost control of the vehicle. Aygöl noted that the onlookers who saw the car in the trench called police early in the morning yesterday, saying, “Seven people died in the accident, and the car was removed from the trench.” The bodies were sent to Akçakale State Hospital.


Gold found in sewer dig on view

MARDİN The gold, silver and bronze pieces that were found during the digging of a sewage system in Mardin’s Sürekli village are currently on display at Mardin Museum. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the exhibition, Mardin Governor Hasan Duruer said people have been settling in the Sürekli village, which is located on the historical Silk Road, for ages. Duruer also said they think that the 524-pieces of historical artifacts might be the treasure of the 40 Thieves, who resided in the village. Meanwhile, the museum’s director, Nihat Erdoğan, said in a written statement that digging for the sewage system in the village started on Oct. 4 and that following six-day excavation efforts, 524 pieces of historical artifacts, including gold, silver and bronze coins, were discovered.
