Speaking to the Anatolia news agency, Ersözlü said the state should take measures against wild boars, whose population has increased in the Beyşehir Lake basin, where cereals, legumes, sugar beets and garden plants grow. The boars cause damage to farms during harvest season and create dangers for drivers during the winter season because they cross the road in large numbers.Noting that the best way to fight against the wild boars is to let wolves into the area to feed on them, Ersözlü said he will ask the Beyşehir Environmental Protection and National Parks Department to undertake this project as a way to reduce the number of wild boars.
Noting that administrators have previously released wolves to fight against wild boars, Ersözlü said residents have been told to not kill the wolves when they see them unless they pose an immediate danger to human life. “When wolves are hungry, they may attack animals belonging to our residents. However, they are a necessary tool to reduce the number of wild boars,” Ersözlü said.
Pointing out the danger they pose to people, Ersözlü said hungry wild boars often come to fields during harvest season and eat farmers’ produce. “This has reduced productivity. They are also a hazard to drivers because they cross the road in large numbers during the winter,” Ersözlü said.
Ersözlü also said more hunter clubs are needed that can organize hunting parties. He added that the district is ready to provide the necessary facilities and that it has asked for assistance from the government to help organize these hunts. “We want to start a project to increase the number of wolves in the area. The number of wolves in nature has decreased due to hunting activity, eventually leading to an increase in the number of pigs in the area. This is the best time to fight against wild boars as it is not harvest season,” Ersözlü noted.
