Ice caused a 10 vehicle pile-up on İstanbul’s Haliç Bridge yesterday morning in which two people were injured. Low temperatures led to ice forming on the bridge, which caused drivers to lose control of their vehicles early yesterday morning, leading to a collision. Drivers trying to avoid the accident were unable to stop and crashed into the bridge’s barriers.
Police officers arrived at the scene and supervised the removal of the cars involved, but they did not warn other drivers about the ice on the bridge. The bridge was not salted after the accident. After the police left the scene, there was another accident due to the icy conditions, at which point the bridge was salted. Drivers criticized the lack of precautions and complained that necessary safety measures are only taken after accidents.
