Turkish President Abdullah Gül left Ankara yesterday to pay a visit to oil-rich Kuwait, the first Turkish presidential visit to the country in 12 years, at the invitation of the Kuwaiti head of state, Sheikh Sabah IV Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who currently heads the rotating presidency of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
“In the meetings held in Kuwait, we will review bilateral relations with Kuwait and Turkey and discuss how to improve our trade relations and how to expand relations into other areas,” stated President Gül, at a press conference before departing for Kuwait. The president was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan along with Turkish businessmen and deputies. Gül also added that he will share his views on recent developments in the region. The Turkish president will in addition participate in a meeting of the Turkey-Kuwait Business Forum.
