Turkey hit hard by severe winter weather

Farmland in Edirne, where the Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling championships take place, was flooded after the Tunca River overflowed its banks.

Turkey was struck by wintry weather with drastic drops in temperature over the weekend and on Monday. İstanbul was hit by driving rain and, in higher elevations, snow, on Sunday, which forced the İstanbul Ferry Lines (İDO) to cancel several ferries. A homeless man, 45-year-old Faruk Örgücü, was found dead at a Zeytinburnu bus stop. His body was taken to the Council of Forensic Medicine (ATK) morgue.
The downpour caused floods across the city. Teams from the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) and the İstanbul Waterworks Authority (İSKİ) worked to stem the flooding with over 500 vehicles and over 1,000 staff.

AKOM teams were sent out about 6 p.m. on Sunday to the Beşiktaş, Fatih, Bakırköy, Avcılar and Silivri districts. Water accumulation in a total of 102 houses, workplaces and roads was drained. Additionally, AKOM and İSKİ teams cleared blocked water channels and drains across the city.

Cars were damaged in over two dozen accidents across İstanbul, leading to heavy traffic congestion on some roads.

A storm that had led to the cancellation of ferryboat services in Çanakkale weakened early Monday, and ferryboats resumed their normal schedule.

Meanwhile, farmland in Edirne’s Sarayiçi region, where the Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling championships take place, was flooded after the Tunca River overflowed its banks. While noting that the water line of the Tunca and Meriç rivers had increased due to excessive rains, Edirne Governor Mustafa Büyük told the Anatolia news agency that his province is taking measures against flooding.

About 200 vehicles, including trucks, buses and cars, were stranded on the road to Ağrı’s Tendürek Mountain, which connects Ağrı’s Doğubeyazıt district to the province of Van, due to blizzard conditions and ice.

Heavy rain is expected in the central Black Sea region, the southern parts of the Mediterranean region and around the provinces of Afyonkarahisar, Giresun, Gümüşhane and Bayburt, the State Meteorology Bureau reported on Monday.
