Dozens of Afghan troops are undergoing training in explosives, mountain climbing and guerrilla warfare at a Turkish commando instruction center in Isparta. Turkey, NATO’s sole Muslim member, has refused to send additional troops to Afghanistan for combat operations but said it would increase training of Afghan security forces.
Maj. Gen. Abdullah Barutçu, commander of the training center near this southern city, said Friday that more than 70 Afghan officers and soldiers are currently training in Turkey. About 150 Afghans have trained since mid-October. Turkish military spokesman Brig. Gen. Metin Gürak says Turkey has trained more than 8,000 troops in Afghanistan since 2001. Around 700 Afghans have attended Turkish war colleges or counterterrorism courses.
