“Büyük Oyun” (A Step into the Darkness), Turkish filmmaker Atıl İnaç’s sophomore-feature directing effort, won praise from film critics and festival-goers in India, where it was the opening film of this year’s International Film Festival of Kerala this week.
“A Step into the Darkness,” which has yet to have its Turkish premiere, follows the tragic story of a teenage girl who loses her entire family during a US-led operation against insurgents in her village in US-occupied Iraq and flees to Turkey to find her brother.

İnaç co-wrote the film’s screenplay with veteran journalist Avni Özgürel, who also penned the script for “Zincirbozan,” İnaç’s 2007 feature debut, which recounts the events that led to the Sept. 12, 1980 military coup.

“A Step into the Darkness” was featured in the Kerala festival’s 50-plus title World Cinema program alongside such international festival favorites as Ang Lee’s “Taking Woodstock,” Lars Von Trier’s “Antichrist” and Ken Loach’s “Looking for Eric.” The film received a standing ovation from a 6,000-strong audience at the festival’s opening gala, where İnaç and Özgürel, who is also one of the film’s co-producers, were in attendance, the Anatolia news agency reported on Thursday.

“Darkness” had its world premiere at the 33rd Montreal World Film Festival in late August. The International Film Festival of Kerala was slated to wrap up its 14th edition on Friday.
