The already-qualified Fenerbahçe Yellow Canaries, as expected, beat Moldova’s FC Sheriff 1-0 in their last Group H match at İstanbul’s Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium on Thursday.
A goal from inconsistent winger Uğur Boral in the 15th minute gave the Canaries the victory they needed as they continued their campaign in the Round of 32 where they were seeded.

The result sent Sheriff packing from the competition, while Dutch side FC Twente finished second behind winner Fenerbahçe, when Ronnie Stam scored with a long-range shot that deflected past Robinson Zapata in the 35th minute to cancel out an earlier goal for Steaua by Pantelis Kapetanos.

Thursday’s match was legendary Brazilian defender Roberto Carlos’ last appearance for the Canaries, where he played for two-and-a-half seasons, before returning to his home country, where he will continue his playing career with the Corinthians team.

Lukaku sends Anderlecht through

Elsewhere, 16-year-old Romelo Lukaku scored twice in nine minutes to give Anderlecht a 3-1 victory at Ajax Amsterdam, sending the Belgians into the knockout stage of the competition.

Spain forward David Villa missed a penalty but later grabbed an injury-time winner as Valencia triumphed 2-1 at Genoa to secure its place and eliminate the Italians.

Anderlecht and Valencia were joined by Lille, which beat Slavia Prague 3-1. Only four places were up for grabs in Thursday’s 12 games, with a number of teams having already qualified, including Anderlecht’s opponent Ajax.

Anderlecht and Ajax finished level on 11 points in Group A, the Belgians edging top spot on a head-to-head record.

Valencia scored in stoppage time at the end of each half to beat Genoa and top Group B with 12 points.

Goals from Yohan Cabaye, Gervais Yao “Gervinho” Kouassi and Ludovic Obraniak gave Lille a 3-1 win over Group B bottom club Slavia Prague.

Salzburg was the only team to complete the group stage with a 100 percent record, winning 1-0 at Villarreal thanks to a seventh-minute goal by Dusan Svento in Group G.
