A Ukrainian-flagged cargo ship ran aground at the Çanakkale Strait early Thursday morning, coast guard officials said. The 163-meter-long “Lady Juliet,” with a crew of 26, was carrying about 7,000 tons of fertilizer from Russia en route to Algeria.
Rescue efforts will start after divers from the Turkish Coast Guard examine the ship underwater. A Çanakkale harbor manager said: “We will not turn on the engines due to the position of the ship. Therefore, we plan to drag the ship out of the strait using tugboats.” Tugboats were sent to the scene immediately after the Turkish Coast Guard received a radio call from the ship’s captain; however, rescue efforts were not started immediately due to safety concerns.

Officials from Çanakkale Strait Vessel Traffic Services said they warned the ship a number of times before it ran aground but that they did not receive a reply from the ship.

Meanwhile, a Turkish cargo ship ran aground in the Bosporus. A tugboat was sent to the scene. The 53-meter-long ship, Ümit K, with an 11-member crew, was carrying marble from Marmara Island to a harbor in Ordu’s Ünye district.
