Snow has paralyzed life in some of Turkey’s eastern provinces and has affected transportation by causing numerous roads to become impassable. Eighty roads in the eastern province of Muş and 150 roads in Tunceli were closed because of snow this week.
Speaking to the Anatolia news agency, the secretary-general of the Tunceli Provincial Administration, Mehmet Tunç, stated that in Tunceli’s districts of Pülümür, Hozat and Malazgirt 150 roads were close because of heavy snowfall and added that 10 emergency teams are on standby to deal with emergency situations. Sadrettin Tunç, the secretary-general of the Muş Provincial Administration, said teams were working to reopen the roads in the province.

“Despite a great deal of difficulty, we are working hard to open the blocked roads. Our teams will clear the roads as soon as possible,” he added. In the eastern part of the country the temperature usually falls to around minus 4 degrees Celsius at night in winter.

The State Meteorology Bureau says it is expected to continue snowing for the next five days and that they don’t anticipate any change in temperature.

The road connecting Hakkari and Şırnak was also closed because of the snow, which reached a depth of 20 centimeters. Teams from the General Directorate of Highways have started clearing the snow so the road can be reopened. Officials stated that 15 villages and 36 neighborhoods have lost access to cities because of the snow in the two provinces.

Storm in Antalya ends yesterday

A storm that caused flash flooding and power cuts and disrupted in transportation services in the southern city of Antalya earlier in the week came to an end on Thursday. According to the State Meteorology Bureau, 129.4 kilograms of rain per square meter fell in Antalya on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Whereas the storm was a natural disaster for some, especially for those farmers whose fields sustained heavy damaged, it was an opportunity for others. Some people went to the coast to collect the debris from the trees damaged by the storm. They took the wood to their homes to use as firewood during winter. The speed of the wind reached 93 kilometers per hour during the two-day period.
