Flooding was reported in İstanbul’s Kağıthane district yesterday, with heavy rain inundating Cendere Road.

Meteorology officials said yesterday sleet eventually turning into snow was expected in İstanbul’s district centers today while snow could be seen on higher plains of the city.
Temperatures are expected to fall to negative three degrees Celsius at night, compared to 4.7, the lowest recorded temperature for the first half of December in recent years.

Cloudy skies are expected in İstanbul today, while more rain is expected on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. However, temperatures are likely to go up by three to four degrees toward the end of the week. Meanwhile, the State Meteorology Affairs Directorate has warned city residents to take precautions against possible flooding that might be caused by the coming heavy rain.

Flooding was reported in Kağıthane yesterday. Cendere Road was inundated by noon yesterday due to heavy rain. Police officers blocked the road while work machines rescued a number of vehicles that had been stranded. Osman Bayman, a driver stranded on the road, told the Cihan News Agency: “I saw the car in front of me drive through the waters, so I thought I could do the same. But as I drove through, we went deeper into the waters, and the engine stopped. They tugged me out with work machines.”

Meteorology experts have also issued frost and ice warnings for Edirne and Kırklareli. Following snow in northwestern Turkey, across Thrace, ice that formed on the roads led to long lines at the Kapıkule and Hamzabeyli border check points. Highway teams salted the roads throughout the day yesterday. Officials have cautioned drivers to be careful on icy roads.
