On his way back from Mexico to Turkey, wrapping up two separate officials visits, first to Washington and then to Mexico City, Erdoğan said he had conveyed to Mexican officials Ankara’s request to become an observer member.
“They have agreed and Turkey will be invited to the next summit in February as an observer member,” Erdoğan said, emphasizing that the government’s efforts for boosting bilateral relations with Mexico should be cemented by the private sector with the involvement of business delegations in the process.
In line with its multidimensional foreign policy, Turkey pursued a more active policy towards Latin American and Caribbean countries in the early 1990s. An “Action Plan for Latin America and the Caribbean” was put into effect in 1998, and has been reviewed regularly since then. In 2006 Turkey took another significant step, declaring 2006 the Year of Latin America and the Caribbean, giving a further boost to the action plan.
