Turkish president travels to Albania

Turkish President Abdullah Gül left for Albania on Thursday on a state visit.

Speaking to journalists at Ankara's Esenboga Airport prior to his departure to Albania, the first stop of his tour of Albania and Montenegro, Gül said his visits to those two countries would be an opportunity to boost bilateral relations and discuss stability in the Balkans.

Gül said Turkey had historical, cultural and humanitarian ties with Albania and Montenegro that had roots deep in history.

State ministers Selma Aliye Kavaf and Zafer Caglayan, Industry & Trade Minister Nihat Ergun, parliamentarians and businessmen are accompanying the president.

Gül said bilateral relations would be assessed in detail and the parties would seek cooperation opportunities. He said the sides would also exchange views on regional matters.

Gül said Albania became a NATO member a short time ago, noting that Turkey would continue to support Albania's integration to Europe-Atlantic organizations.

Turkish president also welcomed inclusion of Montenegro to Membership Action Plan by NATO foreign ministers during their meeting on December 3-4, 2009.

Referring to Turkey's rotating presidency of Balkan Countries Cooperation Process, Gül said cooperation opportunities in this respect would be assessed during the talks.

In Albania, President Gül is set to meet with Albanian President Bamir Topi, Parliament Speaker Jozefina Topalli, Prime Minister Sari Berisha, and leader of the main opposition party Edi Rama.

President Gül will also attend inauguration of Yunus Emre Turkish Culture Center in Tirana.

Later, Gül will proceed to Montenegro as the official guest of President Filip Vujanovic. He will receive Parliament Speaker Ranko Krivokapic and Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic.

President Gül will be the first ever Turkish president paying a state visit to Montenegro.

During the visits, business forum meetings will be held to boost economic and commercial relations with these two countries.
