[ANALYSIS] Party closure not ultimate solution to end problems, say politicians

9 December 2009 / ALI ASLAN KILIÇ, ANKARA
Some senior politicians speaking to Today’s Zaman have agreed that the closure of political parties is not the ultimate solution to problems and warned the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party (DTP) to refrain from action that could be used as evidence in the closure case on which discussions began yesterday in the Constitutional Court.

The deputy head of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party), Bekir Bozdağ, drew attention to the role of the Constitutional Court in the DTP closure case noting that the court will make a decision which will not only have judicial effects but will also have political repercussions. “The court should do a cost analysis for the country,” Bozdağ said.

He also underlined that a decision to close the DTP will only benefit the outlawed Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK), adding that members of the DTP are contributing to the evidence that will help the court close the party. “The court should reflect on which decision will more costly for Turkey. We know that so far no previous party closures have been concluded to the benefit of the country” Bozdağ said. He noted that the only result of the party closures had been to narrow the democratic field of political engagement and cause people to engage in non-democratic actions.

The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) stand against party closures on principle, said Mehmet Şandır, the deputy head of the MHP parliamentary group, adding that the violence cannot be seen as a measure of politics, referring to relations between the DTP and the PKK.

“If the ties between the DTP and the terrorist organization are proven and the party’s approval of the PKK’s activities is documented, the DTP cannot be viewed as a political party any more and it should be prevented from engaging in politics with this political party identity,” said Şandır, who had previously staunchly advocated the closure of the DTP.

Criticizing the statements made by some politicians to influence members of the Constitutional Court on the DTP closure case, the vice chairman of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), Onur Öymen, also drew attention to the attitudes of the DTP deputies who favors the use of violence in politics in their remarks. Öymen said that he does not take the statements of these DTP deputies seriously and that they should resign from their duties as deputies. “It is impossible to impose political ideas on the state through violence. Such acts will only ruin peace in the country,” said Öymen.

Dwelling on the hopes raised after the democratic initiative was launched by the government to reach a comprehensive resolution in the long-standing Kurdish question, Öymen stated that disappointment in the initiative was reflected in the recent illegal demonstrations by PKK militants in some cities to protesting about the so-called bad conditions PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan was facing in İmralı prison.

“We strongly condemn demonstrations that claim people’s lives and hope that a consensus will be established in Turkey against violence. We have already seen that this consensus has been achieved in our society to a remarkable extent,” Öymen said calling on the DTP deputies to avoid to encouraging violent acts.
