Bus accident injures 27 people
ÇANAKKALE Twenty-seven people were injured when a midibus traveling from Çanakkale’s Lapseki district to the city center overturned in a plant nursery near the road yesterday. A rescue crew and paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after the incident. The injured were taken to Çanakkale State Hospital by ambulance. An Anatolia news agency correspondent, Ercan Özçetin, was among the passengers. Özçetin, who was slightly injured, took photographs at the scene.
7 arrested for torching cars
BATMAN Seven people have been arrested in the eastern province of Batman for firebombing cars, the Anatolia news agency reported yesterday. The vehicles reportedly belonged to the Civil Defense Search and Rescue Directorate and Türk Telekom’s Batman Provincial Directorate. The seven suspects were arrested after appearing in court.
19 hurt in minibus mishap
ERZURUM A minibus carrying students veered off the shoulder of a road yesterday, injuring 19 including the driver, in the Tortum district of Erzurum, the Anatolia news agency reported. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals. Nine students were referred to the Erzurum Regional Research and Teaching Hospital and the Atatürk University School of Medicine Hospital.
On-bus wife murderer arrested
KOCAELİ Sezair U., who shot his wife dead on board a bus from İstanbul to Ağrı in the presence of their son, was arrested by a Kocaeli court yesterday. The wife, Mahkün U., 37, had previously filed for divorce due to irreconcilable differences, and she left İstanbul to go to her family in Ağrı with 10-year-old Vasfican U. in tow. When the bus left the Kocaeli bus terminal after taking on passengers, Sezair U. flagged it down and took his son and wife off the bus. After Mahkün U. once again got on the bus with her son, her husband got angry and shot Mahkün U., who died despite the efforts of emergency teams. Vasfican U., who witnessed the incident in the bus, was remanded to the care of his sister.
19 years’ conviction for wife killer
ADANA A man who stabbed his wife, from whom he was separated, to death in the lavatory of their son’s school received 19 years, two months’ imprisonment yesterday. In testimony during the trial, the husband, Bekir D., said he killed his wife since she said she was seeing another man. “I accept my crime. I did not want this to happen, and I regret it,” he said.
