MİT officials detained in Ergenekon probe

7 December 2009 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The head of the National Intelligence Organization's (MİT) Erzincan branch, identified as Ş.D., and two other members of the institution were taken custody on Saturday as a part of the ongoing investigation into Ergenekon, a clandestine organization charged with plotting to overthrow the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party).

Osman Şadan, the commissioner from the specially authorized Erzurum Public Prosecutor's Office, detained the MİT officials over allegations that they worked closely in cooperation with Ergenekon, and brought computers and documents from the MİT office in Erzincan to Erzurum to examine them.

After a considerable amount of ammunition, including hand grenades, was found on Oct. 27 in Erzincan’s dam lake, the Erzurum Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation into the apparent existence of a clandestine network in Erzincan in connection with Ergenekon. Two gendarmerie officers were arrested on Nov. 25 over their connections to Ergenekon and secret ammunition caches. Weapons and bullets were found in the home of one of the arrested suspects during the operation. Although the officers served in Erzincan, the investigation is being conducted by the specially authorized Erzurum Public Prosecutor’s Office.
